Advent: The Christian New Year

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. (John 1:1-5)

The season of Advent, which comes comes from the Latin word adventus meaning "coming" or "visit," begins four Sundays before Christmas and ends on Christmas Eve. Advent is the beginning of the church year for Christians.

United Methodist minister and author J.D. Walt says that Advent "issues a clarion call to wake from our slumber, realign life, and get in step with the Holy Spirit."

This holiday season, our congregation will celebrate the Christian New Year, which is Advent. We invite you to read Seedbed's The Christian New Year devotional with us. You can pick up a copy at church (while supplies last) in late November. There are four videos to accompany this devotional, which will be posted each Sunday during Advent.

We hope you will gather with family, friends, and neighbors and celebrate the Christian New Year this Advent!

Not everyone feels cheery around Christmastime. Those facing a loss – such as the absence of a loved one, divorce or separation, financial misfortune, health crisis, or another painful experience – can feel burdened by the joyfulness of the Christmas season. During such times in our lives, we need comfort and consolation and to know that we are not alone.

Blue Christmas event is a quiet, contemplative service that invites you to seek healing and hope.

Childcare will be available for infants – 5th grade.
